To Heart 2: Episode 13 (Final)

Final Episode!

Last episode looked much better than this one, which is a shame because this is the final episode. In any case… hmm what can I say? This is a wrap-up similar to the first [To Heart->] series in which, if you are one of those viewers who expect a definite conclusion in an anime finale, you would be in for a disappointment. Yep folks, we don’t have love blooming here in To Heart 2.

And another aspect of this finale is an anomaly. Some new character was introduced! A new character appeared… in this final episode. How’s that for a shocker? That really made me think whether they are gonna follow up this series for a second season, because it was really the wrong time to introduce that character, no matter how you look at it.

2005 Personal Statistics

2005 WATCHED
Aah, look at this pathetic list. While it pales in comparison with everyone else, it’s already a huge number considering my busy schedule. If I include all the other (backlogged) anime I watched from previous years, I think I average 2 episodes a day in 2005. Not too much, but if you think about it (over 700 episodes!), it is rather too many. What more with others?

I will do more reviews as time goes by. Watch out for them.

My lunatic friends! Glad to see you again!

I’m no English expert. English is my secondary language. While I am very literate with it, I do make some mistakes, especially when it comes to grammar. If you have been reading my blog for a while, you could see grammatical patterns of mine that may be non-standard, and essentially, erratic. I think that even in this paragraph alone a linguist would argue that some of the sentences have wrong grammar. At the very least, you would understand what I’m talking about, right?

Along with my life-long learning of the English language is my fascination with Engrish. Engrish is an oh-so familiar term among us anime fans, because of the hilarious way the Japanese attempt to speak the language. The Japanese language is quite different from the English language (most of which is because of the R and L sounds), that is why some Japanese have some difficulty in speaking, translating, and even writing in English. The end result is sometimes funny. That is why this certain series of English language study aids made in Japan struck a note. It is a study aid like no other, and seems to be intended to punch more Engrish in rather than making people learn the language the right way. Plus, it’s a sure-fire hit for otakus!

image
Moetan is a set of books (and now even an audio CD) that tries to be a quick English-Japanese dictionary of sorts. It actually has a story part, consisting of short stories written in English, with matching moe~ drawings of characters. Then a summary of some English words used is listed along with its Japanese translation and a sample sentence. Those sample sentences create the hilarity of the entire book. Some sentences are really funny because it either has bizarre use of words, reference some kind of Japanese otaku culture, or just plain Engrish. (click here for a sample)

image
The main character in the CD (Pastel Ink) is voiced by well known anime seiyuu Tamura Yukari. sounds like a popular anime seiyuu I know, I just can’t pinpoint who. Her English is quite, well, Engrish. Sometimes I don’t even understand the English words she’s saying!

image
Aside from moetan, moetan II and the moetan listening CD, I see many other moetan stuff in the website. One is a rather amusing iPod nano spoof advertisement of the small book version of moetan, aptly called moetan nano. There also seems to be a towel on sale, apparently with a rather provocative drawing of a moetan character. There also seems to be a online mobile game, still teaching English words. A figure also seems to be on sale, as well as other books related to moetan. Hmm… that’s a lot of moetan for you.

With all those cute little things, plus a chance (no matter how little) to make a person’s ‘Engrish’ a little better, moetan seems to be a very weird mix that somehow works out rather well. So try your best in it, my lunatic friends!

Here are some more examples I picked up from the moetan listening CD:

AgeThis is an ‘age’ in which even young witches use brute force. (Raging Haato! – Nanoha)

GenerallyBe careful, the prettiest character is ‘generally’ a man. (‘usually’ should be a better word)

GrowIt embarrassed everyone involved, that the child actor keeps on ‘growing’, while the character he plays doesn’t. (LOL Harry Potter)

IllusionForeigners who come to Akihabara usually have the ‘illusion’ that most Japanese people have special hobbies. (everything is an illusion)

JudgeNever judge a book by its cover, it will only bring you grief. (yea right)

ReleaseFor God`s sake! They ‘released’ a remade version of the game without an additional heroine! (happens in some console versions of bishoujo games)

ReservationI heard that sales were to be by ‘reservation’ only, but boxes were lined up in the store window on sale. (ooh that reminded me of [XBOX 360->xbox-xrated], hehe)

SergeantThe rank of the frog seems to be ‘sergeant’. (Keroro Gunsou!)

To Heart 2: Sasara Kusugawa

Generic disclaimer: Same basic rules apply as in my [To Heart 2->toheart2] project. Please do comment or contact me in case I have mistakes in describing each girl’s scenario.

image
Sasara Kusugawa is the new character scenario added in [To Heart 2 XRATED->toheart2-xrated]. As such, it is possibly the longest, but for some reason, the most eventful. Despite its length, her story is one of record. I may go so far as to say that this is the best To Heart 2 scenario! Maybe it’s personal opinion, but then again, Sasara’s character isn’t exactly my favorite type, and yet her story captivated and hooked me up. Not to mention the introduction of the best supporting character in the game too!

It isn’t exactly all good. Through the middle, there seemed to be filler events featuring almost all the other girls of To Heart 2. Yup, they show up one after the other in seemingly cameo roles. Completely a service to their fans. Sasara’s fandom may be one in question, because her ending is unconventional in this type of game… which I like though. Also, be warned that this scenario contains more than enough fanservice to alienate you, and that is still aside from the obvious H scene. True to the XRATED brand, it seems. I’ll keep the fanservice pictures at a minimum level… hopefully. So without further delay:

To Heart 2: Episode 12

Note: There was actually another episode that aired between this one and episode 11. It was a special recap episode though, so I didn’t count it in the numbering, for continuity sake.

It’s Konomi’s turn to complicate things! They’re clearly emphasizing the love angle now, and between the two main To Heart 2 girls, Konomi’s took a whole episode to develop it, while [Tamaki’s->toheart2-11] was merely a shocker. This is the best animated To Heart 2 episode so far, and features a lot of cute close-ups of Konomi in all her emotions. She blushes, does her eheee~, stares, and even cries in this entire episode. I’m very impressed.

To Heart 2: Episode 11

This is supposed to be the main plot of the entire series, but I only have few things to write about, really.

[Game->toheart2-tamaki-kousaka] – Tamaki events
This episode is an anomaly. It completely put To Heart 2 into a different direction. It should be as expected, but one may wish it wouldn’t go this way. The success of the original [To Heart->] and failure of [To Heart ~Remember my Memories~->] is how they treat this… the game called “love”.

XBOX XRATED

Since I saw some preview videos on MTV featuring Xbox 360, my mouth watered on how much graphics technology has improved in games. One particular game of note was this racing game which totally blew me away, it was the most realistic-looking racer I have ever seen! I thought, man, X360 is gonna rock.

While I absolutely won’t buy that console, I would be delighted to play it once in a while. Here we have shops which have console gaming rentals at cheap rates per hour, so it’s possible that I can see and play a X360 soon. Seems that Microsoft has the edge because it has an early lead with the other next-gen consoles PS3 and Revolution.

Not quite in Japan.

News sources seem to tell that the Xbox 360 launch isn’t as big… as expected? Or at all? Hmm… how many thousands did they sell so far? Quite incomparable to any recent console launch. I recall PS2 selling a million in Japan on just one day, if I’m not mistaken. That one is l33t.

Now check this out… X360 launches in Japan at almost the same time as [To Heart 2: XRATED->] right? Wanna guess which sold better? Which lines are for X360 and which are for TH2X?

imageimageimageimage

Ok fine, my current favorite game is absolutely no match for a giant game console in the long run, but isn’t it great to feel that somehow TH2X outsold X360 on launch day? a bishoujo game seemed more successful than an entire game console? Whahahaha! Microsoft just got a beating from some bishoujo girls! W00t!

Worship Ruu~!! Raise our hands to the sky! Ruu~!

Sorry for this mindless post, it really just seems funny (to me only). Not to mention both have X’s on their names… er but that was lame too.

Oh, and someone got a perfect idea to boost Xbox 360 sales!

January Anime Season (Winter 2006)

I like the fact that next year I’d be more open to new anime. All series I watch except for the two Hime animes (Futago and ä¹™ Hime) are ending by this year, so maybe I can watch a new one and/or catch up on an extreme backlog.

Update: But it turned out otherwise. I completely skipped the season. So much for being ‘open’.

You can still catch the new anime premiers on this site.

So far these titles interest me:

Binchou-tan – I remember this mascot. She had an interesting silent movie.

Fate/stay night – Impossible to miss! The [game->type-moon] that I cannot touch, now I can watch!

Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora – Looks nice, so I’ll give it a try.

Kashimashi – Girl Meets Girl – I need to start reading manga again. Massive backlog on everything. This one sounds interesting… a guy transformed into a girl! Crossdressing to the extreme.

Lemon Angel Project – Hmm… an anime about song and dance idols. I’m sold.

REC – Now, an anime about a voice actress? Looks like a trend.

Shinigami no Ballad – If this is what I think it is (a pseudo-alternate of Jigoku Shoujo), count me in. Next year I’ll be adding Jigoku Shoujo to my watch list, and so I’ll have a contrast of black and white.

To Heart 2: Episode 10

Tenth episode!

[Game->To Heart 2: Sango and Ruri Himeyuri] – Ilfa events on the Himeyuri scenario
Third consecutive episode on the Himeyuri scenario. I thought this was the most faithful conversion so far, but in the end it feels condensed yet again. But since it focuses on Ilfa rather than the twins, I felt more appreciative of her viewpoint, so her background story doesn’t feel as rushed compared to the game. The animation seemed to be better than last time, so I wasn’t too annoyed.

Animax-Asia… Dubbed in English – Episode 7.5: Initial D Filipino Stage

December 1, 2005

Since this is a specific topic I’ll create it under an episode 7.5

So it did show up, a Filipino dub of the first 14 episodes of Initial D: Fourth Stage. They called it Part 1 because the series is not over yet. And I tell you this, I really wish I could let everyone hear the dubbing… because it’s SO BAD, IT’S GOOD!

You know those kinds of stuff which are so corny or so bad, you turn up having fun and laughing at it instead of being disgusted. That’s how the Filipino dub is. Actually, it is a very unhealthy kind of Taglish, a mix of Tagalog (Filipino) and English in conversations. It’s similar to how you hear English phrases in jpop songs, except that this one doesn’t mix pretty well. Usually in real life you can hear the rich spoiled-brat class of people speaking in Taglish (I call them coñotics). Sounds oh too fitting a style since in general the street racing scene in our country would compose only of people who can afford expensive cars and modifications. While we “normal people” resort to NFS:Underground and Most Wanted for the pimp-my-ride fix, spoiled brats do it for REAL and show off their fast and cool rides, despite their inability to drive fast because of metrowide heavy traffic.

Wait a minute, why did I relate our street racing scene to Initial D? Well, mostly because the Filipino dub converted the cool Initial D characters into spoiled brats! Most of them sound like spoiled brats now, really. The Takumi voiced by Matteo Guidicelli doesn’t sound innocent anymore, he sounds like a pro. On the other hand, the Kyoko voiced by Angel Locsin sounds oh too soft for my tastes, and she sometimes even whispers the dialogue. It’s a no-no in dubbing.

This is in my opinion a bad decision for Animax-Asia. Why fourth stage already? Why not show the previous stages first? A typical local anime fan here who only watches on TV would have never heard of Initial D, because it hasn’t aired in any local channel at all. Some may have heard of it over at the video game arcades, but that’s just it. Their Initial D Fourth Stage campaign is merely banking on the star power of those two famous people. Oh, and did I tell you already about how they advertised this?

image
Yes folks! Fast cars, hot babes. This is definitely not the point of Initial D. Sure, it has hot babes, but they don’t model in front of cars. And of all the magazines, FHM. Are they talking to the right audience? FHM junkies want hot babes and fast cars, not some anime about street racing (“Anime? What’s that?”). I think it isn’t even remotely about the anime anymore, it’s about drag racing and the hot Angel Locsin.

Amazing. With a totally unrelated marketing campaign, one-of-a-kind dubbing, and weird choice of programming, I’m very, very impressed with Animax-Asia’s Initial D: Fourth Stage (sarcasm). Because it’s SO BAD, IT’S GOOD!

Yes, Angel Locsin is hot. rawr.
