moetan

My lunatic friends! Glad to see you again!

I’m no English expert. English is my secondary language. While I am very literate with it, I do make some mistakes, especially when it comes to grammar. If you have been reading my blog for a while, you could see grammatical patterns of mine that may be non-standard, and essentially, erratic. I think that even in this paragraph alone a linguist would argue that some of the sentences have wrong grammar. At the very least, you would understand what I’m talking about, right?

Along with my life-long learning of the English language is my fascination with Engrish. Engrish is an oh-so familiar term among us anime fans, because of the hilarious way the Japanese attempt to speak the language. The Japanese language is quite different from the English language (most of which is because of the R and L sounds), that is why some Japanese have some difficulty in speaking, translating, and even writing in English. The end result is sometimes funny. That is why this certain series of English language study aids made in Japan struck a note. It is a study aid like no other, and seems to be intended to punch more Engrish in rather than making people learn the language the right way. Plus, it’s a sure-fire hit for otakus!

image
Moetan is a set of books (and now even an audio CD) that tries to be a quick English-Japanese dictionary of sorts. It actually has a story part, consisting of short stories written in English, with matching moe~ drawings of characters. Then a summary of some English words used is listed along with its Japanese translation and a sample sentence. Those sample sentences create the hilarity of the entire book. Some sentences are really funny because it either has bizarre use of words, reference some kind of Japanese otaku culture, or just plain Engrish. (click here for a sample)

The main character in the CD (Pastel Ink) is voiced by well known anime seiyuu Tamura Yukari. sounds like a popular anime seiyuu I know, I just can’t pinpoint who. Her English is quite, well, Engrish. Sometimes I don’t even understand the English words she’s saying!

Aside from moetan, moetan II and the moetan listening CD, I see many other moetan stuff in the website. One is a rather amusing iPod nano spoof advertisement of the small book version of moetan, aptly called moetan nano. There also seems to be a towel on sale, apparently with a rather provocative drawing of a moetan character. There also seems to be a online mobile game, still teaching English words. A figure also seems to be on sale, as well as other books related to moetan. Hmm… that’s a lot of moetan for you.

With all those cute little things, plus a chance (no matter how little) to make a person’s ‘Engrish’ a little better, moetan seems to be a very weird mix that somehow works out rather well. So try your best in it, my lunatic friends!

Here are some more examples I picked up from the moetan listening CD:

AgeThis is an ‘age’ in which even young witches use brute force. (Raging Haato! – Nanoha)

GenerallyBe careful, the prettiest character is ‘generally’ a man. (‘usually’ should be a better word)

GrowIt embarrassed everyone involved, that the child actor keeps on ‘growing’, while the character he plays doesn’t. (LOL Harry Potter)

IllusionForeigners who come to Akihabara usually have the ‘illusion’ that most Japanese people have special hobbies. (everything is an illusion)

JudgeNever judge a book by its cover, it will only bring you grief. (yea right)

ReleaseFor God`s sake! They ‘released’ a remade version of the game without an additional heroine! (happens in some console versions of bishoujo games)

ReservationI heard that sales were to be by ‘reservation’ only, but boxes were lined up in the store window on sale. (ooh that reminded me of [XBOX 360->xbox-xrated], hehe)

SergeantThe rank of the frog seems to be ‘sergeant’. (Keroro Gunsou!)

To Heart 2: Sasara Kusugawa

Sasara Kusugawa is the new character scenario added in [To Heart 2 XRATED->toheart2-xrated]. As such, it is possibly the longest, but for some reason, the most eventful. Despite its length, her story is one of record. I may go so far as to say that this is the best To Heart 2 scenario! Maybe it’s personal opinion, but then again, Sasara’s character isn’t exactly my favorite type, and yet her story captivated and hooked me up. Not to mention the introduction of the best supporting character in the game too!

It isn’t exactly all good. Through the middle, there seemed to be filler events featuring almost all the other girls of To Heart 2. Yup, they show up one after the other in seemingly cameo roles. Completely a service to their fans. Sasara’s fandom may be one in question, because her ending is unconventional in this type of game… which I like though. Also, be warned that this scenario contains more than enough fanservice to alienate you, and that is still aside from the obvious H scene. True to the XRATED brand, it seems. I’ll keep the fanservice pictures at a minimum level… hopefully. So without further delay:

To Heart 2: XRATED

and i thought it can only go borderline fanservice…

To Heart 2: XRATED

To Heart 2: XRATED is essentially the same game as the original To Heart 2 for the PS2, except that new scenes and features were added. You could still refer to my [To Heart 2->] project for details on each character, since nothing much has changed on each of their stories.

What has changed? If the word XRATED still didn’t give you a tip, I don’t know what will. Yes folks… in a seemingly different (but not so) move, a bishoujo game has turned from all-age to adult! Usually, when an adult-rated bishoujo game gets popular enough, it would be converted to all-age, cleaned-up versions on a console. To Heart 2: XRATED is the extreme reversal of that system. But since another major games maker ([Key->]) has also done that recently (non-ero game Clannad having an ero-game sidestory called Tomoyo After), I wonder if it’s going to be a trend. Reportedly, TH2X is becoming a success on its move to… er… adulthood.

THE SPECIFICS
– The entire game in 800×600 glory (higher resolution than the PS2 version… not that it matters much.)
– Added H scenes for all characters.
– Some CG additions to Karin, the Himeyuri twins, and the first Ilfa CG. (semi-H)
– New character scenario (Sasara Kusugawa), also comes with new CG and background music of course.
– Two minigames.

NEW CHARACTER
image
The new character that is introduced in To Heart 2: XRATED is named Sasara Kusugawa. She is the student council president, and is one schoolyear level higher than the male lead. More details to come when I finish playing her scenario. It’s kinda long by the way.

MINIGAMES
Super Sweets Scramble
imageimageimage
This one is a vertical-scrolling shooting game. You shoot cakes, chocolates, candies, and all kinds of sweets! There is a 3 or 6 minute timelimit, and you collect powerups for shooting upgrades. It’s quite fun while it lasts, and I recommend trying out all the various characters. Each of them have unique ability powerups, and some are so powerful it’s crazy.

Doki-Doki Panic Library
imageimageimage
This one is a puzzle game. The object of the game is to arrange books of the same color using your character to interchange each book. Once 3 or more books of the same color are near each other, it disappears tetris-style and you score points. Some special books are there too. There are many game options including a vs. mode.

To Heart 2: Sango and Ruri Himeyuri

Playing this scenario went off smoothly as well. The HMX maid robot stuff was incomprehensible to me though, but generally since this story is about the Himeyuri twins, it doesn’t get too much focus. It’s rather nice that some predominant To Heart references like Kurusugawa Electronics and HMX-12 come into play. And so without further delay…

This wasn’t as confusing as I thought it would be. Although as usual details may be erratic, the general theme of this story is similar to those of typical alien-goes-to-earth anime or related stuff. A difference though… Lucy is the best of them all!

To Heart 2: Yuki Kusakabe

This is the shortest scenario, but the most confusing so far to me! I really never knew the point of Yuki’s story, except that she is also of the childhood friend/promise type. In any case, I will try my very best in relaying to you whatever little I understood about Yuki.

To Heart 2: Tamaki Kousaka

Generic disclaimer: Same basic rules apply as in my [To Heart 2->toheart2] project. Please do comment or contact me in case I have mistakes in describing each girl’s scenario.

Next to Konomi, Tamaki’s scenario is one of the easiest to understand. I was able to breathe a sigh of relief.

This one takes the cake, and it surprised me the most. My least favorite To Heart 2 girl actually has one of the best scenarios in the game! I admit that Tamaki didn’t interest me at all when I was playing through Konomi’s scenario. But after playing this one, I can now understand why there seem to be more Tamaki fans than fans of any other girl in To Heart 2. And so with that said, I’ll give you a glimpse of Tamaki’s story.

Okay, so basically the initial events play out the same way as Konomi’s, so please refer to these important days for further understanding, if you haven’t read them yet.

I’m a bit ok this time, but towards the end, it got quite confusing. In any case, Yuma’s scenario had gone quite smoother than Manaka’s, at least I never saw myself scratching my head all the time. Thanks to moyism also for helping me figure out the story!

To Heart 2: Manaka Komaki

Futility.

All throughout this scenario, all I am feeling is futility. This is the the hardest scenario I have played so far, in terms of not understanding what the heck is going on. I fear for the future, if ever I still have the guts to play the scenarios of other To Heart 2 girls. Because of this, please expect that the things I will say about Manaka “will have errors”. Having said that, why am I still relaying potentially erratic information through this blog? Sorry, but I love To Heart 2, and I think you will, too. I really hope that those guys doing the To Heart 2 translation would do it for real, and completely. I don’t care how much time it takes, as long as there is hope that I can correct all these information. Oh well, let’s go back to our regular programming.

She’s the second girl I finished in playing To Heart 2. Part of the reason is that her scenario is quite short. She doesn’t appear too much until the latter half of the general timeline. Anyway, I’ve compiled a list where she has appeared in my detailed To Heart 2 project:

[To Heart 2: April 13->]
