Whoa!

SHUGO CHARA EPISODE 10 SUBS
http://bluemist.animeblogger.net/subs/bluemist-sc10.zip

Arienai! Impossible! My first fansub ever!

Well I happened to find this subtitle file… but it turns out to be a improper one. So i borrowed (stole?) his timings and re-translated it myself! It took 3 hours of crazy effort apparently, but I feel it was worth it. Granted this anime is aimed for kids, the dialogue is obviously simple (to Japanese kids), but it was definitely still a chore.

I didn’t bother to copy the OP/ED because it has been refined to death by obvious subbers like [Formula]. They will definitely release the fansubbed episode and so this is rather more self-serving than self-boasting. In any case, please do fire up your raws and load this sub, because I need comments! Have I done well? Which lines were completely wrong, and can you give corrections? I ‘did’ improvise some of those lines… just like ‘that’ other sub, but at least it’s not ‘that’ bad. Sorry ‘whoever you are’…

Enjoy!

  1. I tried to watch it and the file size was virtually nothing. And the file itself was .ass unpackaged… =/…

Was this a trick for a virus or something?

  2. Hey, I checked out your subs, and I have to say, not bad for a first time. There’s a few translation issues here and there, and some of the dialogue could be reworked to sound a bit more natural in English, but overall the translation job seems well done.

Here’s a few of the errors I noticed:

2:12 – “Neguse mo naoteinai shi.”

Neguse basically means “bedhead”, so what she’s saying translates to something like “Your hair is a mess, too.”

4:35 – I’m pretty sure he said “aitsura”, not “aitsu da”, so he was referring to all of them, not just her.

    6:07 – “Ore shiranai nya!”

Since this is colloquialism that translates to something along the lines of “It’s not my problem” or “I don’t have anything to do with this” I would’ve used something like that rather than the strictly literal translation you used here.

7:28 – Didn’t see any subs come up for the dialogue here.

There were also a few other t/l errors I noticed, but those were the most obvious things I saw.

If I was doing a real t/l checking job I would make several recommendations about the choice of dialogue as well (9:13 is pretty awkward, for example). I only watched up to the eyecatch, so I can’t comment on anything after that, but overall I like your translation style and it seems accurate enough.

Good work! Not bad at all for someone who only just took the JLPT4.

Oh, and feel free to let me know if you want more detailed feedback on anything. 🙂

  3. @0rion

I may be too literal in many lines for the sake of accuracy, probably because I didn’t like straying away from what was actually said. In effect, some dialogue would seem totally out of character for some (like kids saying too complicated words). I discovered first-hand how hard it is for a (fansub) translator to balance… keeping it either literal or contextual to the story, while picking words according to the character’s style of speaking.

    Anyway thanks for the corrections!

  4. Hmm, after a glance over it, it seems quite good esp. for someone at JLPT 4 level. There are some (minor) mistakes though (I wont tell you the exact corrections though as I’d end up saying what will be used in Formula’s release).

And also, thankyou for not bashing formula like the other guy who “subbed” the episode (“I didn’t bother to copy the OP/ED because it has been refined to death by obvious subbers like [Formula]. They will definitely release the fansubbed episode”)-though I’m not sure if I’m in the position to say that as I’m just a TLC…

  5. lol @ tagalog fansubs. I might just help out on that, for the sake of laughs =P

up until now, contextual vs literal translation is still a great dilemma of mine as well. In my case, I think of it as a sign of still not being able to fully grasp the language =[

nevertheless, congrats on ur first fansub! hehe =3

  6. hi,I think I am sort of late blogging this (it aired on Saturday), but I ended up contemplating for a very long time whether or not to wait for the winter season or dive right in and start with Shugo Chara Episode 10. As you can see, I decided the second option. Actually, it would have been more sensible to wait until Episode 11.
