Lovely Complex

Lovely Complex

imageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimage

With the seas of bishoujos I sail lately I really appreciate having a catalyst. For this season Lovely Complex is the counter-programming, and I should say that this is really a blast! Despite rollercoaster animation quality, this shoujo series is a total LOL-fest! Extreme comedic value with a lighthearted touch on romance… and height complexes.

You see, Risa is a tall girl. Usually tall girls are the school idols of anime society, but this one here is a total baka. Well not really, she is as talkative and fun as a rowdy girl can get. On the other side, Otani is a short guy. Usually short guys get the flak and ridicule in anime society, but this one has his thing going (good basketball skills for example). Nevertheless he is quite an baka too. If we mix baka and baka together we form the “All Hanshin Kyojin”, a nickname awarded to them by the school, because they always bicker with each other as if they’re some owarai comedy duo! Yep, Risa and Otani started up doing word wars with each other… and crazily enough ended up STILL fighting by the end of the series. The question though is… will they find love with each other?

I would say that relationships between a tall woman and a short man are statistically low, it’s usually the other way around. Lovely Complex delves on this kind of ‘height complex’ a bit, in that Risa wouldn’t imagine falling in love with a short guy. Likewise, Otani wouldn’t prefer someone taller than him. Nevertheless the setup is fun enough, but what Lovely Complex excels in is the totally extreme laugh factor! All characters speak in Kansai-ben, which is a perfect dialect for owarai comedy. Tsukkomi and boke-type jokes abound, which doesn’t necessarily translate to English well, but Lovely Complex gives the aural factor treatment because ALL the characters just SHOUT their lines! This anime OVERACTS like crazy! Might as well say that this is the first OA (overacting) anime I’ve watched. This ridiculous energy made me laugh out loud ‘literally’ almost every minute, and it really never lets up. The comebacks and the witty dialogue… very well executed. Maybe not really well-executed per se but it’s done in the OA fashion as mentioned, and that makes it as if you are part of the LOL gang. You know, if they had the “laughing audience” like in US TV comedy series, I think this would be a total knockout. The comedy kept me entertained, and the story isn’t so bad either. Just my observation, but the love story seems like a reverse of what [Suzuka->] had, in which Otani acts as the male version of tsundere… if there is such a fandom classification.

There’s nice development in the relationship of Risa and Otani, although some new characters just pop up out of nowhere near the end. This must have been a manga quirk, because they didn’t fit the whole manga content on there. I think they were struggling for a closure near the end, and the energy kinda died down, but still the rest of the series were so strong I just didn’t mind the slightly lowered quality. Speaking of animation quality, since this is a crazy LOL-fest, the character designs just zoom out of proportion, and the faces deform in very weird ways. When things get serious though, you would notice the inconsistencies in the way they draw between episodes. For a show like this though, it isn’t a major setback. Yup, this is one rare instance of me not minding the animation quality, because the rest of the show is just that good.

All in all, a surprisingly good anime, and one that makes me want more shoujo in my watch list. Lovely Complex is a hyper-WIN in my record books, and warrants my repeat watching. It’s hard to make me laugh (even rarer to make me laugh ‘out loud’) but this anime managed a ton of them (I even choked once, haha). Highly recommended.

Da Capo II: Episode 1

imageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimage

Summary:
– Why only 13 episodes?
– Gah, more Engrish from yozuca*
– Anzu didn’t get any OP lovin.
– Why is Minatsu a prominent figure in the OP? She was in the last scene.
– Yui Horie should have played Nanaka, the new eternal goddess of Da Capo II.
– They are not following the game from the get-go.
– Hooray for Koko fans!
– Another good song by CooRie.

I’m looking at the voice cast, and it seems like a strange mix-up. Only Sakura (yay Yukarin!) and Suginami reprised their role, and Yui Horie as Yume is a miscast for me.

And Yume looks like Nemu in this anime. This can’t be! Yume in-game is much cuter!

The worst part of it all this is that I “feel” [DCSS->da-capo-second-season] vibes. That’s not a good thing. Its deviation from the original game though is quite interesting, it will keep me guessing. Maybe we would have a reverse-play or mix of Koko and Nanaka’s stories? How would they handle the other girls now that they’ve made a surprising Yoshiyuki-Koko connection? The 13-episode limit still worries me, and Minatsu’s prominence seems out of place. Da Capo II lives up to its name, a “da capo”, back to the start again folks.

We deserve to know the true stories in the game, and so I will “try” to play the game once again to finish Minatsu, Otome, Yume, and Da Capo (Sakura) scenarios. I hope Da Capo II doesn’t turn crappy because when it does I will lose interest. In any case, if you haven’t already, please do read up on three of those characters on this project page:

All-in-all, this is a somewhat average start. I’ll be keeping eye on this still though.

School Days (TV)

School Days

Finally, another controversial anime. Ever since the hugely destructive emo soap opera in the name of Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien left me breathless, I’ve been clamoring for some other show that has all the angst of a mature romance story in anime form. Alas, no other anime ever came close to the greatness of that one… until School Days. But the question is, did School Days topple Kiminozo in my heart? Well, let’s see…

Nice Boat

You should know by now. A recent murder incident in Japan forced all channels airing School Days to cancel the airing of the last episode. The bad news is we need to wait before we see the final bloody episode. Good news is that, yes, it will be expectedly bloody.

Apparently TV Kanagawa, the channel which was supposed to be first to broadcast the episode, replaced it instead with some nice scenery show. Geez, as if this show wasn’t controversial enough… and so thus our meme creators of the internet have a new target…

makotoniceboat.jpgniceboat.jpg

The otaku thus declared this a canon episode of School Days then? Awesome! It’s the calm before the storm, cause we know that the ‘real’ final episode of School Days will be teh perfectstorm. You should enjoy your boat while it lasts Makoto. You may have your show ‘axed’ for now… but you can’t escape the ‘saw’ and the ‘knife’.

Thanks for the LOL! It’s really a nice boat.

loli crystal display

I just got myself a LCD monitor, and it’s sooooooo sweet.

Granted this is just a 19-incher 1440×900 and not as l33t as Full HD 24-30 inch babies, at least it does 720p like I want it to. It’s widescreen too, for obvious anime enjoyment whenever it is a widescreener. And larger screen means bigger bishoujos to see. But actually, I’m not watching many anime lately, instead enjoying harvesting or saving little sisters. I wish they could scream “onii-chan” too, but on second thought… I still like 2D imoutos better.

To Heart 2 OVA: Episode 2

To Heart 2 OVA

The second episode is about the sisters Manaka and Ikuno Komaki. This marks Ikuno’s anime debut! The [game->toheart2] featured a bit of her in [Manaka’s->toheart2-manaka-komaki] scenario, and so I was looking forward to her stint in the OVA. The OVA finally arrived, and well… it is still typical To Heart 2, aside from more fanservice than the usual. Anyway, this is the ever-present beach episode, and Ikuno is quite bored.

Information Overload

image

I don’t know about you, maybe it’s just me, but are we having too much of a good thing these days?

I remember the days when life was simple. Toys were just Legos and Gameboys, news were just newspapers, pictures are on photo albums, and entertainment is based on radio and TV. Now we have computers and the internet, and then the world suddenly changed. We are at the point have more games and toys than we can shake our sticks at. At the point where news needs to be aggregated (RSS anyone?) just to be readable, pictures needed to be tagged just to be searched, and entertainment… we just discover new things every single second of it. I see this as information overload, folks, and we all know that too much of a good thing can turn dangerous.

In today’s age, there are literally an infinite number of ways to lose your time, mind, sanity, and maybe life, in the pursuit of what keeps you happy. At the time of this writing, I’m really having a hard time to put it into proper context without comparing my lifestyle with that of our older generations… our moms and dads. I would imagine that back in their days, life was simple. They don’t have to mind so many things except themselves, the people around them, and generally the important stuff that really matters in their life. In our days, we seem to mind so many things. For example, if you try to browse the internet, and discover news that this certain company is cutting hundreds of jobs in another country. Then you feel affected by it because you have some sort of product from that company. Maybe if you are a forumer or a blogger, you type in your insight and show the world how intelligent you are in analyzing these stuffs… But hell, think about it, isn’t it completely UNRELATED to you? Why should you care? If it were the 1960s, you won’t even know about the layoffs, even if you have their product. This may be a really small amount of information, but it ate a minute of your time, and a number of your brain cells, wasted on NOTHING.

My explanation still alien? Sure, let’s go anime. Before the torrents, before the fansubs, heck even before the internet even posted video, we have anime confined on TV, VHS and probably DVD. Simple, we watch and enjoy. We share with our friends the enjoyment by watching together, or talking about it sometimes. But we have the freaking tubes now, and we watch too much. We share with our, er, internet friends the enjoyment by not watching together, but now recommending stuffs. There’s just too much out there already. From a very obscure manga to a very very rare doujin picture of your favorite bishoujo to a very very very rare figurine that only a blogger from Japan has ever *apped on. What to do with your time? Do you want to blog today? Watch episode 224 of long running shounen anime? Read chapter 400? Play bishoujo game scenario #2? Wait, let’s not confine this to anime alone. How do I tag my mp3s? Wow, new 6-core processor, imagine my fps in that game. Oh no, that school shooting is so horrible. Wait, I need to wash the dishes… oh well, I can do it tomorrow.

A real major factor of this can be our globalization. As communication progresses between countries and continents, we exchange information so rapidly we tend to boggle our minds around it. At the forefront of how we communicate is information technology. 20 years ago it is unthinkable for someone to be able to chat with another person at the entirely opposite end of the globe without paying a hell of a phone bill. Now as long as you have a decent internet you can even “see” each other through webcams. With globalization, we seem to lead ourselves into a ‘generic culture’, where you tend to (want to) know whatever all others know. “Hey, the ice cream is great over here at XX store in XX country!” “There’s a cool bar at XX city, let’s try it out sometime.” “WOW, this bishoujo game is pretty great! Oh, and this manga too, the new one made by this author who also made XX…” The list of conversations can go on.

It’s already so bad, that the current trend nowadays is none other than… “search!” Search? Google, Live, and Yahoo is our prime friends. Think about it, why do we depend on search too much nowadays? Why do we feel the desperate need to look for every single tidbit, triva, or nitpick about a particular topic. We have been so nerdy on everything. And now, we amplify our already troubled minds in terms of the new Web 2.0 revolution, collaboration. Now we hear other people’s thoughts, we see other people’s entertainment, heck we already know what other people have been “searching” for.

Is information overload really dangerous? So what if we waste our time, money, patience, sanity, etc? Well, that previous sentence alone says it all. No matter how you put it into perspective, a WASTE is still a WASTE. You could have done a better project at school if only you didn’t pick up your portable game console. You could have been promoted at your job if only you don’t mind too much about what other options you have, researching for hours on end on the internet. You could have gotten a girlfriend if only you haven’t wasted so much time with useless 2D bishoujos (ouch that hurt). Don’t think of this as my excuse for not blogging lately, but really, sometimes I just wonder what kind of life I lead had I not done this thing, or that thing…

Sometimes it is better to turn off the plug. Wake up, smell the coffee, go outside. Breathe true air. We have too much info, it’s starting to bog us down. The madness will never end, and so I won’t conclude this article with something hopeful. As the internet grows bigger, our communication with others becomes stronger, as products and services continue to come to us from every part of the globe, and as we desperately strive to fill ourselves up being a part of this entire information ecosystem, by sharing, ranting, and basically enjoying it, the overload will continue. I just hope you aren’t too affected by this… I know I’m trying.

Motteke! Sailor Fuku

[MEDIA=3]
This OP is total parody bait.

Therefore I will lay this space for all the ‘otaku and beyond’ people who dare wear a seifuku/sailor fuku and/or cheerleader dress and dance to the newest… and someday the craziest… dance sensation since Hare Hare Yukai.

This post will probably be updated with all the amateur vids that I can find. If you have some, please do comment your finds as well.

Gambatte! Harikitte! My Darling Darling Please~!
Hare Hare Yukai song in Lucky Star OP – Some timings are off but nevertheless good mix. One of the most basic things to do with the dancing OP.
Motteke! Sailor Fuku Stepmania – The moment I’m waiting for. DDR WINS!
Reverse Play Soramimi – oo ratS ykcuL in backmasking. Someone needs to sub this. The best part is near the end, almost like a reference to Haruhi.
Motteke! Pocky! – This is awesome! A mix of the Lucky Star OP and the extremely catchy viral Pocky CM song by Orange Range!
Death! Sailor Fuku – Weird mix of Death Note song and Lucky Star OP. It fits in the start but not so much near the end, but still okay.
Moar Pocky CM – Better versions!
Beatmania Version – Not so much a fan of Beatmania, but here it is.
Unknown Song – Dunno where this came from but it is a very good video edit of the dance. EDIT: Thanks to Demian for the heads-up.
Beatmania IIDX GOLD RUSH – Make it make money!
Adding bass to the music – Mad guitar skillz.
Papapapapam! – Haruhi doing a Konata!
OMG – I dunno if this is supposed to be disturbing or funny.
The Melancholy of Magiranger + Motteke! Haruhi Magiranger? – Two sections, first is Magiranger to the tune of Hare Hare Yukai, and Haruhi + Magiranger to the tune of Motteke. Excellent edits.
Lucky Star Baby – Old Lucky Star image song (from the DS game?) and the OP video.
Lucky Star + King Gainer – Nuff said.
Lucky Material! – I miss that Negima OP, one of the best.
Baka Star – Someone drew sketches.
Tennis Star – Prince of Tennis Live version.
CONTESTANT # 1! – Ooh am I seeing things? The very first contender! Not half bad at that!
Motteke! Pichi Pichi Pitch! – Mermaid Melody Sailor Fuku.
Motteke! Michael Jackson! – AWESOME! King of POP plus queens of MOE combine!
AI M@I MASTER! – Idolm@ster is always win, therefore this video is win.
Someone drew sketches again – Nicer and wackier.
Matrimelee – What a weird game it should be…
CONTESTANT #2 – More awesome video editing here.
More guitar – More bass.
GUNPLA EDITION! – From the maker of Hare Hare Yukai gunpla edition? In any case, this is madness! This is GUNPLAAAAA!
Gundam SEED Lucky – The Gundam we all know and love (but I hate Destiny)… moefied.
Invisible Version – Where’d all my lolis go?
Gundams Lucky Star – Gundam stop-animation recreation of one scene from the anime!
Xenopittan – Cute song. It’s Futari no Xenopittan.
