The blogger whose name is written in this note shall…

Burned out. Has a big project at work, so has no time to blog. Said blogger will not die soon, but is currently killing himself in symbolic sort of way. He apologizes for not updating frequently, as life in Japan seems so harsh.

By the way, He’s currently watching NANA now, still wondering if his viewership is being counted in the amazing 4-6% TV ratings of this otherwise late-night anime. He also wonders if the NANA2 movie would even be a success without the old actors around. He watched Miyazaki Aoi’s TV drama and cried a lot at the bittersweet ending. Still crying that she can’t be Hachi again for the sequel.

“Hirano Aya is awesome”, he said. Aside from Reira, she also voices in Death Note and Galaxy Angel II. It’s kinda like her year. Her birthday is October 8 BTW. This blogger will rejoice.

He also watched the first episode of Death Note a while back, and was very pleased. He considers this one of the best shounen series, and is a very definite, definite watch. He now will proceed to read the manga… that is… if he still can, because it’s really going to be tight at work.

He promises to be back again for another post within the week, although it is still highly doubtful. This just proves that there is no such thing as destiny in this world, so some kind of Magical Note can’t exist. He just wishes that there’s some kind of Life Note that would get him out of this mess. Why not the Death Note? He doesn’t want to die soon, of course. In any case, he wishes everyone to enjoy the new anime season.

In about 10 minutes, this blogger will sleep.

How do you end up here?

I was browsing through my stats today, and… behold! I found myself giggling at the sight of the search phrases some people use. Basically, some of you probably found this site using a search engine right? So let me tell the most popular search terms you use, as well as some rather amusing ones that, well, amuse me.

These phrases are from the very recent days only it seems, but hopefully it is a precise description of what kind of topics people want to find in this blog.

Seems to me that discussion has been flowing lately on how we have already too many anime blogs that seem to be doing the same thing, and that we seem to reach a saturation point where our avid readers may be getting too tired or overloaded of it. So let me give my own take on this, and hopefully we can realize something along the way.

Even with more than [1 year->year-1] of being in the anime blog community, I admittedly am not a major voice. Few people visit, comment, and perhaps enjoy what I write in this anime blog. Mere (500000+ hits?) statistics won’t tell how popular this blog is, because lots more factors need to be considered. For one, Google gives me tons of visitors, but all from rather weird search terms ranging from pr0n to loli. This means that somehow people visit this blog not because of viewership, but because of ‘accident’. Most likely they’ll stay for a bit and move away, forgetting my blog forever. Bye.

I am not even active in any anime community either. You’ll rarely see me in forums, and you’ll rarely see my comments in other blogs. Even that BlogRoll on the right sidebar… it never gets updated anymore. I’m so irresponsible in so many ways because, primarily, I have this thing called “real life” that gets top priority at any time of day.

Despite that said, I still go on to blog in bluemist anime blog. Why?

I enjoy anime, and I enjoy blogging it.

Quite the cliched comment, isn’t it? I know what you may be thinking. (This bluemist guy is so arrogant, pretending to be all high and mighty by telling everyone that he enjoys blogging despite relative unpopularity. Admit it, you just want to be popular.) It’s really a hard topic to explain because there is no one reason for blogging. At one point, having an blog means that you are publishing to the entire internet, so you may be vying for popularity. At another point, you keep a blog because you want to keep track of things, similar to a written diary. Where do you draw the line on self-accomplishment and ego spreading?

To complicate things, anime blogs have a very specific topic: Anime and other related stuff. One topic out of possible millions out there. The catch… we have an very small audience to convey that to. Let’s face it, anime fans are too few in the entire world. Small audience, too many anime blogs.

So where are we heading? Back in the day, we only read a very select few blogs done by dedicated anime enthusiasts. Then more people came in and we became a community. Even more came, and the purpose of having a BlogRoll is fading away, because we are in the hundreds already. Now, even the blog aggregators/indexers are trying to limit the output because of our redundancy.

And so some of us are trying to promote the value of having something different, and I’m all for that. This shouldn’t mean that we now have to “cater” for our audience. That would be ego spreading. We have to somehow find a way to merge uniqueness with self-accomplishment. We need to try to put something interesting in our episode summaries to spice them up.

– Even if we are talking about the same Haruhi episode number X, let’s try to provide valuable insight instead of mere summaries. Discuss. I’m sure that with such a complicated plot, we have lots of thoughts to tell.
– We can insert some comment that Girl X is so cute… then insert cute picture. These little things are instantly readable, after all, most of our audience had probably watched the episode you are blogging already.
– Also, we can maybe try to promote the anime to those not watching it. Give some reasons why. Maybe they’ll be Haruhiism converts in the instant you say something like (OMG GREAT DANCE SEQUENCE! …insert video) to them.
– We can break outside the animated spectrum even. Maybe link some YouTube video of a cute girl dancing to Hare Hare Yukai (I wish). Or bring the news that single X is to be released next month. Or maybe link to a nice picture in a Japanese magazine. Remember, Haruhiism extends outwards.
– Most importantly, we need to enjoy all of those ourselves.

BUT despite all of this, I still think the way we blog anime, and the way people read what we say about anime, will never saturate.

Remember this well. As anime bloggers and fans, we have the literal bragging rights (getting arrogant again?) that we are better off than so many others. Face it, why are there other people blogging such trivial things such as “Oh and so I walked my dog to the park this morning…”, and why are so many people reading it? Isn’t that a waste of time? Okay, so you may argue that anime is killing so much time, maybe affecting social lives, but worthless blogging and reading worthless blogs is oh so much worse than that. With millions of people talking the talk over the internet through blogs, I think the intelligent readers demand “information” and “content” that MATTERS, rather than wasting time on uninteresting matters. For all of us anime fans, anime MATTERS.

Even if we think we are saturating ourselves, as long as it (anime) matters, I think we will be fine.

One Year Anniversary!

Today, bluemist anime blog @ animeblogger.net is celebrating its 1st year anniversary!!!

So I would like to take the opportunity to thank… EVERYONE!

Thanks to all my fellow anime bloggers because you’ve been a vital part in keeping my interest going.

Thanks to all the visitors/anime fans coming from all parts of the world.

Thanks also for the 500000+ hits this site garnered for the entire year!

I probably have lots more to thank about, but I’ll leave it for next year. I hope to continue this for as long as I can, for me and everyone’s enjoyment.

More to come!

Retro!

This season… I’m going retro!!

Yeah baby yeah!

Figures. Since I don’t usually blog anime episode-for-episode, and only do reviews when some series is more or less complete, I can say I’m always one season behind the latest. Furthermore, since I have a backlog of reviews, it makes me even more behind! So, what better way to buck my lazy trend, than going all-out retro!?!

While I’ll still do the jiggy on the neato-latest winter 2005 anime I like, I think some nostalgia would be nice.

Wait, don’t think I’m gonna wipe the dust off “very old anime” spanning years and years ago. With the fast pace of anime, a season or two behind is already “retro”. So sit back, relax, and…

Project Hiatus

Ok, this is it.

Goodbye for 1 month and a half!

Because of studies, I have to be virtually inaccessible until halfway through November. Don’t worry, I’ll try to catch up on stuff afterwards, so please do visit me again by that time.

There’s a catch. Well, this is a maybe, a BIG maybe, but you may see “surprise posts” from me within my hiatus period! It’s most probable especially for the To Heart 2 anime coverage. Don’t count on it or expect it, but it is still possible. For now, if anyone will be watching the anime I think you’ll find my [To Heart 2->] gameplaying project an interesting cross-reference.

Thanks for all the visits, revisits, and support so far, and I hope to see you again in 6 weeks. So for now, goodbye!

Download Backlog

Oh, this is horrible.

For three days now, my internet has slowed down to a literal crawl. I can’t download through Bittorrent, and browsing was similar to my dial-up days. Technically, I’m screwed now. Well that’s just sarcastically perfect timing isn’t it? I was supposed to have a gig worth of downloads!

Ooh, not only did I have an anime backlog, but even a downloading backlog?!?

I just hope that the BT seeds are still intact when I get my speed back, or else this will be radical scampering through all file networks. I seem to be okay with the fansubs, but the raws always disappear after a mere week, and that’s the bigger problem.

In any case, I’m complaining right now to my ISP about this matter. Considering though the multiple quirks I have with the ISP, I don’t think they can solve this one quickly. Our entire neighborhood is affected by the way, which leads me to think that there’s something wrong with our central office. Plus the fact that this is the ‘only’ predominant DSL service available, I guess I’m stuck with it through thick and thin.

Well that’s about it for my random rant.

Ultimate Blog Cleanup

After the layout change, I upgraded so many stuff into my blog to make it more “future proof”, but this move will require me to have a blog cleanup! Because of this, you may see the Recent Updated Posts section to be a bit volatile. Why?

I will edit almost ALL of my posts!

My goodness, am I crazy enough to do this? In any case, I really hope I won’t do this again. This won’t affect you guys too much, but if you’re keen enough, you will find little bits of changes happening to the site. I blame my [summer of bishoujo->] project for this, because it required me to install more and more WordPress plugins.

Current Issues:

Annoying Quotes
I am very annoyed about how WP changes my quotes and triple dots, but I found a way to change them, thanks to Momotato.

before: “Hello” World
after: “Hello” World

before: I’m here
after: I’m here

before: dots…
after: dots…

Isn’t it more natural looking this time? Thank goodness I did.

Cross-linking
I’m using a different plugin this time for making cross-links to posts within my blog. Using the new one will make it link directly to the permalink instead of having an ugly *index.php?name=postname* url. This also avoids my problem of self-trackbacks when linking to my own post.

before: http://bluemist.animeblogger.net/index.php?name=gothloli
after: http://bluemist.animeblogger.net/archives/gothloli/

This is the main culprit as to why I’m gonna edit a LOT of posts, but I think this will be a permanent matter this time, so no more cleanups next time (I’m crossing my fingers).

Stupid Layout
I’ll never ever learn. See how weird the spacings are in the Categories section of the sidebar? And look how Blogroll and Hosted by sections have a dot on the title while others don’t. I SUCK at every kind of web programming. Look at the Meta section… it tells you that this blog is INVALID XHTML! MWAHAHAHA!

I also wanted to stretch this blog sideways because that gray area seems virtually unused, but heck I don’t know about HTML and CSS.

Anyway, those were just some of the stuff that concerns me today. While some are simply annoying, hey, I’m somehow getting to like this web stuff. Ultimate Blog Cleanup starts today, and I hope I can finish in a week’s time. Adios for now.

UPDATE: Thanks to Kabitzin, I learned a bit more about how CSS works! Thanks! The Blogroll and Hosted By sections do not have the annoying dot anymore… YAY! One more problem… the weird category spacings. Go me!

UPDATE 2: Never would have thought that making the blog wider would solve my category spacings too. This is nice enough, I’ll stick to this layout for a while.
