To Heart 2 Review (Part 5)

Review Coverage: April 11 to 17

Some of the major events that happened in this week include Konomi having to cook bento (lunch) for Takaki. Finally, Karin Sasamori has been introduced, and we get to see part of her scenario when Takaki gets (forced) to join her Mystery Club. They get to pet a cat too…

April 11
All Takaki talking to himself, so I won’t understand what happened.

April 12
Konomi asks and suggests that the four of them eat up on the roof from now on, seeing that there are too many people in the canteen every lunch time. Seeing that Yuji and Takaki only could only buy and eat bread everyday, the girls propose that they will cook bento for them! So Konomi will cook for Takaki, and Tamaki will obviously cook for her annoyed brother.

After class, Takaki bumped into Karin Sasamori. She seems to hold a questionaire, and wants to advertise her club through it. That point, she seems quite soft-spoken. Given Takaki’s kindness, he answers her questionaire. But turns out that he got tricked! The questionaire seems to be an application form already! More on that later…

Konomi and Takaki walk home, talking about Genjimaru. While in a flight of stairs, she does the jumping thing again, and falls. Takaki is quite annoyed, meaning worried, about her. Konomi implies that she can’t be as strong as her onee-chan Tamaki.

April 13
Konomi made a mess of herself when she jumpstarts the day with the wrong school uniform. During a break, Konomi called Takaki as Takaki-sempai (attributed to upperclassmen), but it’s kinda weird to hear. At lunch, as promised, Konomi made Takaki a bento. It tastes quite good, but just because it was partly made by her mother too. Anyway, Tamaki gave some tips and advice to Konomi, with the usual antics reaction by Yuji.

After class, Manaka appears and says that the teacher is quite happy for Takaki that he has finally chosen to join a club. Club? He’s forced into it. And so the thing with Karin yesterday was resurfaced. Takaki rushed into the backroom of the gym to meet with Karin. Indeed she was there. Karin introduced her Mystery Club and all, but doesn’t seem to be interested. After numerous pleadings by Karin, she starts to cry. This softens Takaki a bit and forces himself to join the club, albeit not quite seriously though. Well Karin became quite happy for that, and so she continues on with her Mystery Club blabbering, until a comic accident made Takaki stumble on top of Karin! A quite embarassing situation, but Karin turned this into her blackmail event, and so Takaki should really join the mystery club now, or else

April 14
At a break, Takaki saw Karin, but he doesn’t give her too much attention. At lunch, the four is at the roof again. Konomi made another one of her bento, but it seems like a failure in cooking for now. Yuji reacts again. After class, while waiting for the girls, Takaki and Yuji play with this puzzle toy game called “chienowa”, where you seem to have to disassemble metal rings, with a bet of a free treat. Their little bet gets halted when the girls arrive and get interested in it. They join the bet… and Konomi wins! It already seemed like Yuji loses and will treat the girls in this expensive cafe, but thankfully Tamaki treats everyone instead.

April 15
Konomi mentions about Takaki’s school field trip to Hokkaido, and is quite jealous. She wanted to be together with him on a field trip, but instead she will suggest some good ramen shops over there that her father might know.

Then, Takaki came back to the gym’s backroom where Karin is waiting. Karin talks about the Mystery Club again, although she doesn’t seem to be clear in explaining at all. She just says that there are many mysteries to solve in the world. Aliens and UFO’s maybe. She also seems quite obsessed with food, especially something with eggs on it, and so she has a ham and egg sandwich. She also gives Takaki some.

Karin wants Takaki to return after class, but he doesn’t go to her. Takaki meets Konomi, who says that she saw some black cat around. They finally found it, and surprisingly the cat is quite friendly to Takaki, but not to Konomi. Maybe it’s because Takaki’s hand smells like the ham and egg sandwich.

April 16
Karin meets Takaki outside, and seems to ask what kind of girls Takaki likes. Takaki answers, maybe a girl with short hair. More talk, and now Karin concludes that Takaki likes normal girls, and is quite sad about it (why, she’s not normal?)

Walking home, Tamaki ordered Takaki to look closely at Konomi, and see if there’s anything different about her. Anyway, Tamaki says that Konomi has matured. This embarasses Konomi a bit.

April 17
They seem to be talking about the cherry blossoms in the morning, then ghost stories in the afternoon.

This week, our impending lovers make a notch up their relationship by the bento cooking. Yup, the best way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. Konomi doesn’t seem to be confident about her cooking skills though. Also, we see that Yuji is still Tamaki’s pinching bag, very unlike when she is still not around. I guess his true role in To Heart 2 will be up later on. Tamaki remains the big sister of Konomi, who is looking up to her and tries to be like her. And Karin finally makes her major appearance.

Karin seems to have a mix of Aoi’s story (about unpopular clubs) and Shiho’s hyper attitude. She’s an interesting girl, maybe I’ll play her scenario next (if I still have the energy to). Well it seems evident by now that the other To Heart 2 girls will not make an appearance anymore. None of the twins, and none of those two mysterious characters. Maybe next time (if I still have the energy to).

Having known a little bit more about the game thanks to all the help from game-players all over the net, I find out that To Heart 2 is a branching visual novel that is quite easy to win through. It seems that some wrong choices would not instantly veer you away from a particular girl’s scenario, but a player should make sure to make the right major choices, such as choosing places where they can meet the girl, choices that accord to the personality of the girl, etc.

image
They seem to be talking about the cherry blossoms. (Notice the sakura are slowly withering, the trees are turning green again.)

(Street)
Going home with Konomi and Tamaki.
image
Konomi “Nee Taka-kun, do you believe in spirits and ghosts?”

Choice: Dunno, haven’t seen one either.

Konomi “I see, so we’re the same, we really wouldn’t know right?”

Konomi seems to be scared of these types of stories.

To Heart 2: April 16

(Lunch)
Went outside…

image
Karin is there.

“Nee, Taka-chan, what kind of girl do you like?”

I’m not interested.

“Heee? Maybe… do you like boys?!”

No way?

image
“But you said you’re not interested in girls…”

“So then, what kind of girl do you like?”

Choice: Someone with short hair.

“That kind?”

More talk…

image
“Taka-chan likes normal girls… I see…”

(Street)
Going home with Konomi and Tamaki.

image
Tamaki comments that Konomi has matured a bit.

image
Tamaki told me to stare closely at Konomi…

image
Closer…

Konomi continues to go red after that.

To Heart 2: April 15

(Streets)
image
Konomi with a yawn…

image
“You’re gonna have a school field trip right?”

She’s a bit jealous.

“I wanted to be at a field trip with Taka-kun…”

Seems we’re going to Hokkaido.

“Delicious ramen there.”

“Hmm… maybe I’ll ask my father. Father is working in Sapporo, so maybe he knows some good ramen restaurants.”

(Backroom)
image
“Taka-chan, you came! I was waiting!”

Seems like were starting some activities.

Or, maybe not. It’s still not clear what are we gonna do exactly.

“Anyway, member Taka-kun and me, the president, explore mysteries…”

“That’s the Mystery Club.”

“There’s so many mysteries in the world…”

Still unclear.

image
“Pachi pachi pachi pachi!”

Karin starts to read some mystery story… and is slowly getting confused.

“Hehehe, this story makes you sleep.”

“Let’s try something easier…”

Talk about aliens…

“Aliens… Taka-chan!”

Talk about UFO…

“UFO… Taka-chan!”

“So, for our first operation… let’s find some aliens! Pachi pachi pachi pachi!”

image
“An opening!”

She starts eating ham and egg sandwich.

Karin offered me some.

“One for all, is the Mystery Club motto.”

“That’s why, Mystery Club’s sandwich is everybody’s sandwich.”

Starts talking about sandwicheds.

Well break is almost over.

“Let’s find UFOs together!”

image
“Well then, after school ok?”

(poor Karin, I’m going for the Konomi scenario, so after school…)

(Outside)
Meets Konomi.

There seems to be a black cat around.

“I tried to lure it with food…”

Meow… the cat appears.

“Why? When I’m not trying to lure it…”

“Maybe Taka-kun’s fingers smell like food…”

Well Karin gave me some sandwich a while back…

Meow… I pet the cat.

image
Konomi wants to pet the cat too.

Konomi comes closer, but the cat seems to be angry…

“Ehh? Why?”

“Maybe this cat is a girl…”

The cat starts attacking Konomi.

“Heh!!!”

“Unfair…”

To Heart 2: April 14

(Break)
image
Karin saw me.

I try to avoid her by trying to find something.

I meet with Yuji, and ask what am I doing. Maybe I’m weird trying to run away.

(Roof)
image
Lunch!

Seems like Konomi failed a bit in today’s cooking. A bit too spicy maybe.

Tamaki gave some bit of tips.

image
Yuji’s usual sarcasm ends up this way.

(Lockers)
I start leaving but Konomi asks to wait for her a little bit.

(Grounds)
I wait a bit outside the school. Yuji sees me and hangs out for a bit.

We seem to play some kind of challenge game… “chienowa”?? Whoever loses gets to

treat the winner to a snack.

(This seems to be a puzzle ring toy, you play by trying to disassemble connected

metallic rings and stuff… arrgh I’m not sure.)

image
Konomi and Tamaki arrive, and seem to be interested too.

Choice: I give to Konomi.

Yuji comments on how impossible it will be for Konomi to win the game… until…

Cling…

Konomi “It disassembled.”

Yuji “What the heck???”

Konomi “Ehee~~”

Yuji “Yea, so let’s stop playing this boring game and go home okay?”

Tamaki “Hmm… so whoever loses treats us a snack right?”

(Cafe)
Tamaki “Thanks Yuji.”

image
Konomi “Thanks Yuu-kun.”

Yuji “Hey, why in this place?” (apparently expensive)

Tamaki “Because it’s delicious here. And I want to drink some delicious tea…”

Yuji “Delicious but EXPENSIVE!”

But it turns out that Tamaki treats everyone instead, to Yuji’s relief.

image
Yuji “What the heck, I hoped you’d mention it sooner…”

Talk about how delicious the food, and more cooking tips for Konomi.

To Heart 2: April 13

(Konomi’s house)
I wait…

“Let’s go.”

image
Something’s wrong here…

“HAAA!!!”

Wrong uniform.

(Halls)
“Takaki-sempai…”

Sempai?

“Eheee~~”

image
Oh it’s Konomi.

Tamaki suggested the -sempai thing to Konomi, but it sounds weird.

“I knew calling Taka-kun ‘Taka-kun’ is better…”

Bell rings, so we go back to our own classes.

(Roof)
Lunch at the roof again.

image
“Eheee~ look look. Today’s lunch is Tonkatsu-bento!” (breaded pork)

Yup, Konomi made some for me, thanks.

“You’re welcome”

Tamaki opens hers, it’s quite a feast according to Konomi.

“Ittadakimasu”

The usual “oishii” conversations.

Tamaki “Yuji, don’t speak while your mouth is full”

Konomi tastes Tamaki’s bento… “Oishii”

Konomi “Tama-oneechan, you’re great. Cause you’re tall, beautiful, has your own style, can study hard, and even cooking very delicious food…”

Tamaki “Thank you, but Konomi… I’m 2 years older than you. In 2 years, you might do better than me.”

Tamaki “And, since childhood I’m already making my own food, maybe that’s why…”

Tamaki “Konomi too, you can cook all by yourself eventually”

Apparently Konomi still needs help from her mother in cooking food.

Konomi “Can I cook delicious food just like Tama-oneechan?”

Tamaki “Yup, you’ll be alright. Food just needs to be prepared from the heart…” (It’s like the thought that counts)

image
Yuji “Yup, from the heart.” while probably stealing some food from Tamaki.

Konomi “Yup, I’ve decided.”

Decided what? I ask.

Konomi “Eheee~~ It’s nothing.”

(After class)
Manaka appears.

image
The teacher seems to be happy about me… is this related to the Karin incident a while back?

Manaka seems to imply that me having a club, is quite nice.

Well I tell them that I’m not interested, I was just tricked into it.

image
But I seem to be a hurry going to it. Probably I will be scolded by the teacher if I don’t go.

(Gym)
I try to find the room…

(Backroom)
image
“Welcome to the Mystery Club!”

I see! Mystery Club!

“I’m Mystery Club president Sasamori Karin!”

“And you are 1st member Kono Takaki-kun!” (This is the first time I understood that Takaki’s last name is Kono.)

“Hmm… how will I address you? Kono-kun? Takaki-kun? Hmm… something’s different…”

“Kono-kun, how would you like to be addressed?”

“Okay, then… Taka-chan!” (childish honorific)

“Call me any way you like, but, kaichou (president) seems a bit embarrassing…”

Whoa, she seems to be telling weird stories about me, about how much I wanted to join the club, a big fat misunderstanding I think.

image
“And then… your eyes gazed towards me… with tears in your eyes, saying thank you very much over and over…”

Liar.

“Taka-chan, are you really not interested in mystery?” (maybe, if I’ll play your scenario next time)

No.

image
“Not a bit?”

“Not a teeny weeny bit?”

image
“Not a tiny tiny bit?”

“Not even when you were a kid?”

Maybe.

“See?”

But still no.

image
“You know, I really need a member. Can’t you just hang around here?”

“No?”

image
Karin starts to cry… (awww… wanna play Karin scenario next?)

“You know, Mystery Club used to be my own middle school club…”

“That’s why I wanted it to be carried over now to high school…”

“That’s why, if you don’t join in… Mystery Club will end before it even begins…”

“Just when I was trying so hard convincing the teachers…”

Crying…

Well I guess I started changing my mind…

image
“Yatta!! Arigatou!!”

Hmm… Karin started talking about the club… I thought it’s about mystery studies, purely textbook-based.

image
“ch, ch, ch, nope you are mistaken Taka-chan”

“Maybe outdoor…”

Well I think I have to go now.

“Okay, so then I’ll inform the teachers…”

Still, I try to make arrangements to Karin, I’m still not interested, I’m just gonna help out on her club. Karin is not impressed.

Suddenly, I think the lights went out and we got surprised, and…

image
“Taka-chan… you… touched me…”

“Nee, Taka-chan, suppose I scream “HELP MEEEEE!!!” with a loud voice right now… Taka-chan, will you bear the responsibility?”

“Join the Mystery Club ok? Taka-chan.”

Oh no, she now has an ‘event’ to blackmail me into joining the club. (And here I thought only harem male leads fall into girls…)

image
“And… as Mystery Club president, you must do as I say…”

What if I can’t do it?

“Well, if you can do it, do it.”

“What’s wrong Taka-chan? You seem pale.”

image
“Ok then, I’m going, club’s dismissed for now.”

Blackmail. Clear blackmail. (That was funny!)

(Home)
I ask myself what book to bring for tomorrow. Thinking along the lines of Konomi needing a cookbook, Mystery Club’s Karin may need a science book, etc.

Choice: Cookbook.

To Heart 2: April 12

(Street)
image
Konomi asks me if I always eat just bread for lunch…

image
She was thinking if we could have lunch together.

Tamaki will join too, to Yuji’s and my disappointment.

Tamaki “Yuji and Taka-bou’s reaction, it worries me.”

(Lunch)
We meet Konomi in one of the halls. Looks like Tamaki isn’t around yet.

At the canteen…

image
Konomi “Ahhaha… so many people”

image
Tamaki appears and…

Tamaki offers to buy lunch while we find a place to eat, which is…

(Roof)
Yuji says that canteen is always that full.

image
We eat just bread everyday, and Yuji seems to be boastful about his bread-buying skills (apparently in bishoujo game schools bread is hard to buy.)

image
Well he’s boastful…

Konomi and Tamaki offers to just prepare obentou (packed lunch) for all.

They are trying to make me choose. Will Konomi make my obentou? Or Tamaki?

I seem to choose Konomi (well of course).

“Do you have any request? Hamburger? Spagetti?”

(After class)
While I’m walking… I suddenly bumped into…

image
Karin Sasamori! (It’s been a long while since I’ve seen another To Heart 2 girl)

Seems like she has an announcement to make in our class.

She seems to be promoting her club… and she has some questionaire.

image
“Thank you very much!”

Yuji reacts…

(The entirely complex Japanese conversation escapes me. Not only did I not get what Karin’s club is, or what is her purpose for the questionaire, I also did not understand Yuji’s entire long reaction.)

Let’s just put it this way, maybe I was tricked into joining her club… not that it’s important anyway, I won’t join in anyway. (It’s not the Karin scenario anyway)

(Lockers)
Meet with Konomi.

(Intersection)
image
Konomi tells about a classmate who thinks Genjimaru (her dog) is a weird dog.

(Street)
Also talks about how Genjimaru was tended by Tamaki back in the days. Apparently Genjimaru was owned by Tamaki when she was young.

(Park)
image
Konomi does the jumping thing again.

“Look at me ok?”

Well she falls again.

I’m quite worried.

“Are you angry?”

image
“Sorry…”

“I can’t be like Tama-oneechan” (implying Tamaki’s power)

To Heart 2 Review (Part 4)

Review Coverage: March 21 to 24, April 7-10

I think this is the halfway mark of the series. Many things have happened. There’s spring break, and also we see Konomi finally going to the same high school as Takaki. At this point, I also get to clear up some of my own confusion such as where did Konomi’s junior high friends go.

Some days at spring break (March 25 to April 6) weren’t featured in detail. Some events however were told in flashbacks.

March 21
This day sees the meeting of Konomi and Tamaki. Konomi is very happy to see her onee-san again. Tamaki prepared them a little breakfast, and then offered to go shopping. Takaki is obviously the bag-boy in this event, while the girls are having fun shopping for clothes and… er… girls-only clothes.

March 22
It was all Takaki talking to himself.

March 23
Konomi walks with her dog again. She was thinking on how to give her dog a bath. After school, Konomi meets Takaki, and talks about the upcoming spring break. It would be nice to do something on spring break. Konomi suggested a lot of things, while Takaki suggested a cherry blossom viewing picnic, it is the season of sakura after all.

March 24
Konomi and Tamaki reminds Takaki again about their plans at spring break.

April 7
This day, our gang seems to be spring cleaning with the kids outside. While they’re at it, Takaki remembers his memories of spring break. While the other days were less eventful, on March 30, they actually did the cherry blossom viewing picnic.

April 8
It’s the start of class again, and Konomi finally goes to the same high school as Takaki! She asks Takaki if her new uniform is weird. Also, a big surprise is that Tamaki actually transferred to their school as well! As usual, Konomi is very happy to be with her onee-san, while Yuji thinks it is a nightmare in the making. After class, Tamaki offers Konomi to go to her house, while the boys go to the game center. Konomi, wanting to go both ways, got confused a bit.

April 9
After class, Takaki meets Konomi. Tamaki still doesn’t seem to be around, and so they agreed to go to a nearby cafe without her. Well eventually, Tamaki appears in the cafe, quite angry at Takaki about it, but Konomi is also partly to blame. After that, Konomi’s junior high friends (Chie and Michiru) arrive! Seeing that they have not met Tamaki before, they do their formal introductions. Then the two girls talk to Takaki a bit away from Konomi and Tamaki. Because they are rooting for a Takaki X Konomi love love affair, they see Tamaki as a threat. Nevertheless, they are relieved that Takaki answered correctly their (revealing) questions.

April 10
In the morning, Konomi seems to do morning exercises. Actually, this seems to be preparation for her freshmen physical exams. Takaki sees that Konomi is in a good mood all the way when they walk home together. Well Konomi spilled the beans and embraced Takaki, telling him that she has gotten a bit taller.

We see that slowly Takaki and Konomi’s relationship is getting closer, despite Tamaki’s appearance and Takaki’s continuing stand about not being interested with girls. The addition of Tamaki to the group (now consisting of Takaki, Konomi, Yuji and Tamaki) gives a bit more rapport and comedy to the events that happen everyday. Poor Yuji, I don’t see him bursting out his weird hobbies lately (about robot maids and girls), he is being relegated to be a punching, or rather pinching bag of her elder sister Tamaki. The event at the cafe with Chie and Michiru signifies that slowly both Takaki and Konomi are slowly recognizing their feelings toward each other. It just needs a little more push by the friends. It is further seen by the events at April 10, where Konomi embraced Takaki, an important first.

I’m slowly getting the hang of it. It is really quite challenging this time, and I can only fear bigger challenges ahead when they already talk about more specific things. So far, many events in To Heart 2 are simple, everyday events that can happen to real people given that kind of situation. As a result, simple Japanese conversations are used. As we get more story details from now on, the Japanese may be getting more and more complex, and that will be hell for me. The good news is that I’m now past the halfway mark, and I am confident that I can finish this ridiculous project once and for all.

“More and more, I want to big like Tama-oneechan.”

“Yup, I wanna be like Tama-oneechan.”

Seems to be in a good mood again.

(Shopping district)
Still good mood, humming a song…

“Hey hey, Taka-kun”

“Wanna know why I’m happy?”

“Eheee~~”

She was talking about her medical exams (school always does this regularly, mostly physical exams examining their height, weight, and 3-sizes)

It seems she is a bit taller now.

image
Well, she embraced me, and apparently I’m now carrying her on my back.

“Ah, you don’t believe me do you?”

“It’s true! I really grew up!”

Choice: I commented about her being lighter.

“I didn’t lose weight though, maybe Taka-kun is stronger than before…”

Isn’t it time you let go of me?

“Just a little more, until we get home perhaps?”

No.

“Ehh~ why?”

You’re already big.

“Then I’ll stay like a kid.”
