Genshiken OVA

Genshiken

Episode 13

In about two years, I feel like I have learned more about all this otaku stuff. I just replayed the first [Genshiken->] series in sheer anticipation of the new OVA, and now I get most of the things that they say. I would say that this anime helped me understand the whole subculture from various viewpoints, because each character has his/her different interests. Madarame and Sasahara lead the doujinshi life, Kohsaka is the hardcore otaku, Tanaka is master of plamos and cosplay designs, Kugayama is the talented manga artist, Ohno is the ever-loved cosplayer, and Saki is the ever-loved outsider who just happened to have an otaku boyfriend.

The new OVA adds two more characters to the wild mix. Kuchiki is the loud and totally obnoxious otaku, and now I found my new wuv… Ogiue Chika! Ogiue is the tsundere in terms of her love for yaoi fandom. She pretends to hate otaku (especially female ones) despite being one herself. I feel like she is going to be the most complex-layered character of them all, having read parts of the manga not yet animated. OVA Episode 13 introduces Ogiue, how she came about to join Genshiken, and the riot yaoi fangirl war between her and Ohno.

One very enjoyable thing I noticed is that the voice acting is “very” top-notch this time around. Particularly, Ohno’s seiyuu (Kawasumi Ayako) really shines. Everytime Ohno utters a line I seem to get goosebumps. Almost the same way with the other casting, everyone’s very smooth in their portrayals.

Aside from the excellent voice acting, the animation really rides almost exactly like the manga. While it will be a bit of disappointment to some due to lack of consistent quality, I feel like it captured the original manga art pretty well. I think this is one of the best OVA episodes I have watched.

Da Capo II: Anzu Yukimura

Gothloli know-it-all. The female counterpart of Suginami. First impressions tell me that I might not be interested in her (except the loli part). Indeed, her story started out slow, but after the Ski Trip event which I thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish, I got some much needed urge to finish her story. Thankfully, I wasn’t disappointed. Anzu’s scenario is solid and simple. Moreover, so many characters get involved, including a seeming teaser for the upcoming “Da Capo” story. Very intriguing.

This time, there doesn’t seem to be a direct correlation between Anzu and Minatsu’s scenario, as opposed to the Koko and Nanaka partner scenarios. Minatsu is quite prominent in this one, and I liked her character a bit. I should get started on that one. For now, here’s Anzu Yukimura.

Disclaimer: Lacking Japanese will mean lack of story details. I expect that there will be a LOT of errors in the way I understood some events, because I rely only on the spoken dialogue. To the Japanese-literate game players who may have found this page, please do help me in case I have mistaken in understanding some parts of the story. Please do post a comment or contact me.

July Anime Season (Summer 2006)

That time once again?

I’m keeping my new anime watching at a minimum again. It’s quite a hectic time for me these days. I’m still catching up to [many-a-spring->April Anime Season (Spring 2006)] anime. Add my current penchant for anything Da Capo, I’m sure to give lots more time for gaming than anime.

Speaking of anime though, I wonder if anyone of you noticed this too. It was some anime I anticipated in spring, but all of the sudden it was out of the limelight, and it never aired. My very first case of missing anime:

Where in the world is Finalist?

As for the upcoming summer season, thankfully there are only a few anime that spurred my interest this time, very unlike the massively awesome lineup of spring. And so behold my huge lineup:

Binbou Shimai Monogatari – Anime about poor people = win (remember NieA_7?), because I = poor people.

Tsuyokiss – Tsundere you say? Instant buy! Cool and sweet!

NHK ni Youkoso! – Yet another approach to otakuism just like [Genshiken->] and [Comic Party->] before it. This time, with the topic I like most: bishoujo games.

Chokotto Sister – Something about this intrigues me, so I’ll put it on watch.

I still don’t blog anime episodes, so for more information on these and other anime, please visit our friendly neighborhood anime bloggers and aggregators. That’s it for now.

To Heart 2: Sasara Kusugawa

Generic disclaimer: Same basic rules apply as in my [To Heart 2->toheart2] project. Please do comment or contact me in case I have mistakes in describing each girl’s scenario.

Sasara Kusugawa is the new character scenario added in [To Heart 2 XRATED->toheart2-xrated]. As such, it is possibly the longest, but for some reason, the most eventful. Despite its length, her story is one of record. I may go so far as to say that this is the best To Heart 2 scenario! Maybe it’s personal opinion, but then again, Sasara’s character isn’t exactly my favorite type, and yet her story captivated and hooked me up. Not to mention the introduction of the best supporting character in the game too!

It isn’t exactly all good. Through the middle, there seemed to be filler events featuring almost all the other girls of To Heart 2. Yup, they show up one after the other in seemingly cameo roles. Completely a service to their fans. Sasara’s fandom may be one in question, because her ending is unconventional in this type of game… which I like though. Also, be warned that this scenario contains more than enough fanservice to alienate you, and that is still aside from the obvious H scene. True to the XRATED brand, it seems. I’ll keep the fanservice pictures at a minimum level… hopefully. So without further delay:
