Vocaloid for Valentines: Third’s a Charm

[Vocaloid for Valentines: Second Time Around->]

2012 is a leap year, and that means there’s an extra day in the love month, which only happens every four years. What better way to celebrate this special day than through a third batch of love songs? Here I am again with a handful of nice sentimental music from Vocaloid! So if you are in the mood for a little easy listening while you fall in (or out of, or away from) love this Valentines season, please do have a gander at some more of the best Vocaloid love songs. This is probably one of the most abundant years, as there are a lot of sentimental songs done by our resident electronic vocalists Hatsune Miku, Megpoid Gumi, and Kagamine Rin. As usual, if you don’t like their roboty voice to ruin your listening pleasure, don’t worry, because I also linked “utattemita” versions sung by some of the best amateur singers around Nico Nico Douga. Hopefully this will make you feel inspired and in love, or maybe depressed too, as some (actually, almost all) of these songs revolve on unrequited feelings… like mine (sob). Haha, anyway here we go again.

Title: Yume Machi Contrast
Niconico Artist version: himawari

This song is about being separated from someone in another faraway town. Wondering if they are still seeing the same sky, the girl remembers and cherishes the memory of her past love. The feeling is not of sadness but of melancholy, with her longing to see the person towards the end. It’s a wonderful song to play during a sunset, which is rare for me to see lately because I always go home late at night from work.

Title: Kimi ga soba ni iru youni (Hatsune Miku)
Niconico Artist version: Baru

This song is also in the theme of separation, but this is a more positive song. She has been looking for her love everywhere, and she feels closer to her destination everytime. This is a very sweet song.

Title: Jewel Box (Gumi)
[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skAiQ5H39lY?rel=0&w=560&h=315]
This is a cool slow-rock jazz ballad. It’s not exactly about love, and I really wonder what this song was trying to convey other than a girl enjoying her date with some wine and her precious Swarovski pendant. Nevertheless, very catchy song even with the English parts.

Title: Sayonara Midnight (Gumi)
Niconico Artist version: Rinki
[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ir4XflMxF-Y?rel=0&w=560&h=315]
If you don’t find the first lyric too shocking, because it implies rather blatantly this is a one-night-stand story, this is a very romantic song. The song describes all the romance that happened that night, and in the end she is rather happy that she found a love. I hope it continued beyond “that night” though.

Title: Hyakunen no Koi (Hatsune Miku)
YouTube Artist version: Chieriin
[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=834_6BJaPCg?rel=0&w=560&h=315]
Oh, hundred-year love. This is one of the most emotional love songs in my playlist. I always imagine this song as the best song to play when I get married. Actually the lyrics imply that the loved one has already passed away, so this comes as a love that transcends life. It’s absolutely breathtaking, and always gives me goosebumps as Miku reaches the high note at the end.

Title: pianissimo (Hatsune Miku)
[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVGvYZsgNR0?rel=0&w=420&h=315]
This is yet another story of a breakup. She compared her love as fleeting fireworks, and their last words to each other disappearing along with the wind. I imagine some of the composers of these really take inspiration from their own lives, and some of it is rather sad.

Title: Yakusoku no Tane (Gumi)
Niconico Artist version: Sakino
[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8321Lmfp_M?rel=0&w=420&h=315]
This is composed by one of my favorite Vocaloid producers (40mP), and it’s quite a deep song lyrically. This is a song about broken promises in the form of small flowers, seeds of promise, that were being swept away into the sky.

Title: fix (Hatsune Miku)
Niconico Artist version: wataame
[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yj7fFgvuJJk?rel=0&w=560&h=315]
I remember Hourou Musuko’s “I’ll give you my name” scene with this song. It starts off about some sort of fallback relationship, but then she expresses that even if loving someone hurts, the feeling is still there and real.

Title: Tooi Sora (Hatsune Miku)
Niconico Artist version: wataame and kuripurin
[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCtgUnJlZBY?rel=0&w=560&h=315]
This song is so awwww~. It tells a heartbreaking story of a young love that was separated by a sad twist of fate. They decided to go their own ways, but she always had the sense of longing everytime she looks at the sky crying. The PV is also very heartwrenching, as it shows that the reason for their separation is that the boy was ill and slowly going blind. Awwww~

Title: Yukidoke (Gumi)
[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPBnwu9cTCo?rel=0&w=560&h=315]
This is the most emotionally sad song in this playlist. As the snow keeps falling she remembers the past warm winters with her love, but now it’s too late to bring those memories back. This also has a very effective PV, gets me teary-eyed because it’s also during a winter season that I got rejected once.

Title: S・K・Y (Kagamine Rin)
[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQmJ8JBDpiY?rel=0&w=560&h=315]
This is an absolutely amazing rock ballad. It tells of the shy girl trying to express her love before he leaves faraway again, in just three seconds, with just three words. To be honest, the first time I heard this song, I never realized that S・K・Y stood for “that”, call me slowpoke or something. But because of that my first experience with the song became all the better as the meaning is revealed.

  1. IT’S NOT EXACTLY ONCE EVERY FOUR YEARS BECAUSE EVERY EXACT CENTURY IS NOT A LEAP YEAR (e.g. 1700, 1800, 1900), AND EVERY FOURTH CENTURY /IS/ A LEAP YEAR (2000).
